According to the BBC un-recycled electricals such as phones and computers cost the UK over £370 million per annum in lost materials such as gold, copper and steel. This is an issue as mining for these metals causes pollution due to the emissions given off by the machinery. In addition, it can harm wildlife by destroying nature, as well as fuelling climate change.

In 2017, 155,000 tonnes of electricals were dumped in domestic bins resulting in them being incinerated or put in landfill. Small IT devices, like phones, contributed 9% to this total.

Panels of experts have been discussing ways to increase the recycling of old electrics, as the UK has not reached its target of collecting 65% of electricals. This can be done by offering incentives such as store vouchers or cash-back.
